beauty tip with alex and ani beauty director joseph allaire

Welcome back for another beauty tip with our Director of Beauty, Joseph Allaire. With brilliant summer days just around the corner, you may be planning to spend some extra time outside and soak up some much-needed Vitamin D. Today, the harmful effects of UV rays are well known and we do our best to be careful, but sometimes even the best of us manage to get burned.

I spent the first day of my sunny vacation relaxing on the beach with a margarita in hand. I was covered – or so I thought – in SPF 50. I had no intention of falling asleep, but the day got the best of me and I woke up to find my shins and feet were frying in the sun.

If you should find yourself in this situation, what do you do to ease the pain and, most importantly, limit the damage to your skin?

Act Quickly: Instead of ordering a second Margarita, get out of the sun and start treatment. It can take a few hours for sunburn symptoms to go into full effect, so be aware that a touch of pink at the beach could turn into a big problem just a few hours later.
Hydrate: Any kind of burn draws fluid to the surface of the skin, away from the rest of your body, which leads to dehydration. Make sure you drink plenty of water and no – the ice in your margarita doesn’t count. In fact, alcohol is dehydrating and should be avoided altogether while recovering from a sunburn. Watch out for signs of dehydration, which include: headache, dry mouth, thirst, dizziness and reduced urination. Seek medical attention if you develop fever or chills.
Moisturize: After taking a cool shower or bath, slather on a good moisturizer with water or aloe as the first ingredient. Consider products that contain Vitamin E and C, which can help limit skin damage. You may also want to look for Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, which is a more stable form of Vitamin C that penetrates the skin better than regular Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid). Reapply your moisturizer frequently to soothe the burn and reduce the appearance of flaking and peeling.
