What is Reiki?
Reiki is a practice that is gaining more and more momentum in the science world, and is loved and revered by many for its potentially potent healing abilities. Reiki is an energy practice performed by a practitioner through gently placing their hands on different points of the client’s body. As the healing session goes on, the client begins to go into a deep meditation, and feelings of anxiety, stress, and pain fade away. The practitioner is a conduit that uses both heavenly and earthly energy, as well as different Reiki symbols, to heal physically, emotionally, and vibrationally.

Where Did It Come From?
In the 1900s Doctor Usui, a highly educated theologian, questioned how healing was possible. To meditate on it, he went to a mountain in Japan, the Mountain of Change, for 21 days. He fasted and waited for an epiphany, but to no avail. Finally, he got so angry, he started yelling and stomping on the mountain. It was with the release of his emotion that his breakthrough was able to happen, and he saw the sacred and powerful Reiki symbols. He used them to heal himself and others around the village immediately, and the practice spread wildly because of its effectiveness. A beautiful part about Reiki is that anyone can learn it, so schools opened to teach men and women of all social classes.

What Are The Benefits?
Reiki lowers your “fight or flight” hormone and allows your body’s response to stress to decrease, leading to an overall sense of wellbeing. It can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, leading to increased immune strength and room for spiritual growth through mental clarity. Studies also show that it enhances the health of your hippocampus in your brain, which is critical for learning and memory.

Although Reiki can be received by anyone, only practitioners can perform it because they must receive an attunement to be able to properly use the symbols. Reiki has a series of principles or affirmations that should be practiced daily. By reciting them every day, you can begin to to live a more authentic and healing life. They are:

Just for today I will give thanks for my blessings.
Just for today, I will look at the positive.
Just for today, I will deal with anger appropriately.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will be kind to everyone and everything.
