Once a casual sport in our country, played in hometowns and neighborhoods since the late 1700s, baseball gained massive popularity by the 1860s, when semipro national baseball leagues first appeared across the country. This quintessential American pastime gained such popularity that it is now played around the world. In fact, it’s so beloved in Cuba that this tiny Caribbean nation has won more international Baseball World Cup games than any other country.

Get your notepad ready for these fun – and historical – facts about American baseball.

1. Contrary to popular belief, Abner Doubleday (most renowned for his relation to the coveted National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York) was not the inventor of baseball. In fact, the true origination of the sport is unclear.

2. Believed to date back to the 18th century, it’s been said that baseball derived from cricket.

3.  Alexander Joy Cartwright, the “Father of Modern Baseball,” is credited for the ideation of a diamond-shaped field, three strike concept, three-out innings, and more of the fundamental rules we know today.

4. The first official baseball game was played in 1846.

5. Major League Baseball (MLB) was founded in 1869 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

6. The first televised MLB game was played and aired in 1939 between the Cincinnati Reds and Brooklyn Dodgers.

7. To date, the New York Yankees hold the most World Series titles, with a total of 27 wins.

8. Baseball is the only professional sport to take curses and superstitions seriously. From the “Curse of the Billy Goat” on the Chicago Cubs to the many batter’s box routines, baseball players and fans alike use rituals to up their chances of a winning season
